Powerful 6.1 Earthquake Jolts Eastern Cuba

Monday, December 23, 2024 by Daniel Vasquez

A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck eastern Cuba early on Monday, December 23. This seismic event was primarily felt in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo, though there were also reports of its effects in Camagüey and Ciego de Ávila, as stated by the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).

Dr. Enrique Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service, revealed that the earthquake's epicenter was located 35 kilometers southwest of the town of Chivirico, the capital of the Guamá municipality in Santiago de Cuba. The quake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers, which intensified its impact in the region.

Preliminary data from CENAIS positioned the earthquake at coordinates 19.77 degrees north latitude and 76.61 degrees west longitude. The official statement mentioned "minor damages" in Providencia, in the Granma province, as a result of the quake.

Current Aftershock Activity

In a subsequent video statement, Dr. Arango Arias clarified that the early morning earthquake "is not an aftershock of those that occurred south of Pilón in Granma" nearly a month and a half ago. The expert noted that there have been 170 aftershocks reported from this morning's event, which he described as "normal."

Community Impact and Damage Reports

While no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far, social media posts have already shown some damage. In Manzanillo, Granma province, a balcony of the José María Heredia school partially collapsed, as reported by journalist José Ortiz Benet on social media. The same source depicted residents in the streets anticipating potential aftershocks.

Authorities in Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo are continuing to assess possible structural damages. At CENAIS, experts are closely monitoring the seismic activity and continue to keep track of the situation.

Many users on social media described the earthquake's intensity and duration. This seismic event occurs less than two months after two significant quakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7 struck south of Pilón in Granma on November 10. Since then, the National Seismological Service has recorded over 8,000 aftershocks, 137 of which have been noticeable.

CENAIS urges the public to stay informed through official channels. Authorities emphasize the importance of following civil protection recommendations during such events. This earthquake highlights the active seismic nature of eastern Cuba, a region historically prone to these phenomena due to its geographical location.

Understanding Seismic Activity in Eastern Cuba

Why is eastern Cuba prone to earthquakes?

Eastern Cuba is prone to earthquakes due to its geographical location near tectonic plate boundaries, making it a seismically active region.

What should residents do during an earthquake?

Residents should follow civil protection recommendations, such as taking cover under sturdy furniture, staying away from windows, and remaining calm during an earthquake.
