The recent 6.1 magnitude earthquake that shook the southeastern region of Cuba has resulted in structural damage, predominantly cracks in the walls of homes and state buildings in the province of Granma. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries, and essential infrastructure, including the reservoir system, continues to operate normally, according to the state-run newspaper La Demajagua.

Due to concerns about potential strong aftershocks, local political leaders have advised families to prepare emergency backpacks containing vital items like documents, medications, drinking water, and personal hygiene products.

In all 13 municipalities of Granma, work commissions have been activated to guide and protect the most vulnerable individuals, as well as to assess damage and address community needs. The healthcare system, including hospitals and clinics, is also on alert, following established protocols.

The directive extends to working groups in Popular Councils and educational centers, emphasizing the previous training that helped children in Pilón know how to respond during the earthquake. Despite the situation, residents in Granma have continued their daily activities calmly, though the authorities remain vigilant for any potential incidents, as highlighted by La Demajagua.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:00 a.m. local time, has left a trail of fear, uncertainty, and destruction in its wake, with emotional accounts revealing the distress experienced by those affected and their relatives abroad. The devastation and emotional toll on the most vulnerable communities underline the severity of the situation and the urgent need for attention, as expressed in a Facebook post by Yau Salcedo.

The quake's epicenter was located southwest of Santiago de Cuba, causing landslides and the collapse of large rocks in Babujal, within the Guamá municipality of Santiago de Cuba, illustrating the disaster's magnitude. This incident occurred past Uvero, in an area known for its dangerous proximity of the mountain to the road.

A scientific study released by the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) on its website this Monday highlights that earthquakes are more likely to occur at night in certain Caribbean regions.
