A heartbreaking incident has struck the community of El Cristo in Santiago de Cuba, following the tragic death of 15-year-old Lisnet Guzmán de la Cruz. The young girl passed away after a suicide attempt, allegedly driven by cyberbullying and defamatory social media posts. Journalist Yosmany Mayeta reported that on Thursday, December 19, a harmful anonymous post targeting Guzmán appeared on the Facebook page “Ventorrillo El Cristo,” making malicious comments about her personal life.

Overwhelmed by the humiliation and emotional stress, Guzmán ingested 36 pills of an undisclosed medication, passing away two days later on Saturday afternoon at the North Pediatric Hospital in Santiago de Cuba. Mayeta highlighted that, according to those close to her family, Guzmán had previously attempted suicide earlier this year under similar circumstances.

Despite receiving psychological counseling and starting depression treatment, the relentless harassment and slanderous posts pushed her back into a state of despair from which she could not recover. The “Ventorrillo El Cristo” page, allegedly intended for sales and business, has frequently been accused of spreading anonymous posts that target local residents, particularly teenagers, causing severe psychological and social damage.

Guzmán’s tragic end has sparked outrage and sorrow throughout her community. Family, friends, and supporters are urging local authorities, including the Ministry of the Interior and the Provincial Health Directorate, to investigate the administrators and creators of this page and take concrete steps to prevent future cyberbullying tragedies. Guzmán's case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of cyberbullying and the urgent need to curb the spread of harmful content across social media platforms.
