The community and friends of a man tragically discovered murdered on a chair in a Havana street have expressed their grief and outrage at his brutal death. The victim, known locally as Luis El Garfio, lived on San Bernardino Street, nestled between San Indalecio and San Benigno, within the Santos Suárez district of the Diez de Octubre municipality.
His lifeless body, bearing a stab wound to the chest, was found on Christmas Day around noon on Acosta Avenue, near José de la Luz y Caballero Street, close to the Mónaco area. He was seated on an armchair placed in front of a pharmacy.
"Luis, my friend, why did this happen to you? You have no idea how the whole block feels your loss, brother. We will always hold you in our hearts because, despite everything, you were a good friend, a good father, a good son, and a good brother. Fly high, my brother," wrote Ernesto Herrera on Facebook.
"But rest in peace, don't worry; those responsible will pay sooner or later. In this life, no one leaves without paying what they owe. I love you, neighbor, more than a neighbor, a friend, and a brother. Santos Suárez is in mourning," he added. Ernesto also mentioned that he had seen and spent time with Luis on December 24th.
"Justice must be served; there's a mother, a brother, children, and a neighborhood suffering this loss," he demanded.
Others lamented Luis's murder, describing him as a well-liked individual who never bothered anyone. "May the full force of the law fall on whoever did this. Justice for Luisito, that man didn't bother anyone, he worked hard for his money, what they did to him is terrible," said Karina Fuentes Piñón.
After the body was found, locals shared details of the tragic incident on social media. One resident noted that the armchair wasn't originally in that location. "It was on the corner of Luz y Caballero and Acosta, where a man had discarded it. They moved the chair almost in front of the pharmacy. He was stabbed and left seated there. His age is around 50, and he wasn't known in the neighborhood," they stated.
Another neighbor described the area's conditions, highlighting the insecurity that plagues the streets at night: "Acosta Avenue is very deserted at night, and everyone stays locked inside. It happened right at the pharmacy's door, which usually has a dark entrance, and on the opposite corner is the late Elio Revé's old house, which, despite the light from the porch, is still shadowy. I'm truly shocked."
Residents witnessed Criminalistics experts and officers from the Technical Investigations Department conducting investigations to clarify the events. Until now, no specific details about the circumstances have been disclosed. Authorities have yet to release official information regarding the incident.
