This past Tuesday, the National Center for Performing Arts (CNAE) in Cuba announced the death of Roberto Gacio, a distinguished actor, theater critic, and researcher, at the age of 83. His passing has sent waves of grief through the artistic community in Cuba and beyond. "A sorrowful morning for the Cuban stage. We mourn the loss of Roberto Gacio (1941-2024), an actor, theater critic, researcher of vast experience, and tireless creator, much loved in our theater circle," was shared on the CNAE's Facebook page.

Film director Luis Lacosta, a close friend and collaborator of Gacio, expressed his sadness on social media. "What a way to end the year! The sadness is overwhelming, another dear friend has left us. In our personal meetings or phone calls, we always felt proud of each other and our status as the oldest founding members of UNEAC. Roberto, I will always remember you fondly and will surely imagine your calls every day," he stated.

Impact on the Next Generation

Meanwhile, young theater director Carlos Daniel Sarmiento Barlet commented on Gacio's death: "With great sorrow, I received the news of the loss of my beloved Roberto Gacio. 'The encyclopedia of Cuban theater.' A great researcher, critic, and actor. My mentor and friend. A generous, noble person, always ready to help the young." Sarmiento Barlet also reflected on Gacio's influence on his career: "My first book The Long Journey to Truth is the result of his kindness and all he revealed to me, expecting nothing in return. I had the immense pleasure of writing the foreword for his memoirs, and that will always be one of my greatest professional satisfactions. Cuban theater has lost someone who, without the necessary recognition, was essential. Safe travels, Gacio. Light be with you. Thank you for everything."

A Legacy Rooted in Education and Research

With a degree in Hispanic Language and Literature from the University of Havana and Performing Arts from the Higher Institute of Art, Gacio left an indelible mark on generations of artists and scholars. His research into the Cuban stage addresses critical themes such as the 20th-century theatrical repertoire and acting practices, cementing his status as one of Cuba's foremost theater scholars.

He was involved with some of the island's most important theater groups, including the legendary Los Doce and Teatro de la Luna. Gacio was also a renowned interpreter of the works of playwright Virgilio Piñera, bringing their complexity to life with extraordinary skill.

Contribution to Cuban Culture

Beyond acting, Gacio dedicated part of his life to teaching, giving classes and lectures at prestigious institutions. His courses covered topics such as acting, the history of Cuban and universal theater, costume history, children's theater, and body expression, shaping several generations of artists.

As a theater critic, his insightful analyses enriched prestigious cultural publications in Cuba. An active member of the Criticism and Research Section of the Association of Performing Artists of UNEAC, Gacio regularly participated in panels and colloquiums, leaving his mark on the academic and professional theater landscape.

His contributions to Cuban culture were recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinction for National Culture in 2002 and the Master of Youth Award from the Hermanos Saíz Association in 2020.
