The travel agency Havanatur has recently announced on social media the upcoming launch of the contentious Hotel Torre K-23 in Havana. This luxurious establishment, known for its controversial design and hefty price tag, is slated to open its doors in 2025.

In a succinct Facebook post accompanied by a brief video, the agency stated, "2025 will mark the opening of the tallest hotel in Cuba." The hotel is strategically located at the corner of 23rd and K streets, directly across from the Coppelia ice cream parlor in El Vedado. When asked about the precise opening date, the company responded, "According to several media outlets, the expected date is January 15."

The Hotel Torre K-23, with a staggering investment exceeding $200 million, has drawn criticism for focusing on tourism development instead of addressing pressing issues such as public health and the ongoing energy crisis. Recently, Cuban architect Julio Herrera illustrated on his Instagram profile how this budget could have been allocated to infrastructure, social services, and community development projects.

For many, this controversial project stands as a symbol of extravagance and exemplifies the regime's poor management by prioritizing resources imprudently. Throughout its construction, it faced continuous criticism due to its design and because it was erected during one of the most severe economic crises the country has faced in recent decades.

In November, passersby caught a glimpse of the hotel's main entrance after the scaffolding was removed. During that time, the massive structure, situated in an increasingly impoverished city, was colloquially renamed by Cubans as the "Viewpoint of Misery."
