Grandmother Found Wandering Cuban Terminals to Be Taken to Nursing Home

Friday, January 3, 2025 by Henry Cruz

An elderly woman, whose whereabouts were previously unknown, has been rescued after roaming through various interprovincial terminals in Cuba. The grandmother, identified as Amparo, was finally located thanks to the swift response and collaboration of various individuals and aid groups that have emerged across different cities due to the island's ongoing crisis.

The rescue operation kicked off when one of these support groups learned that Amparo had boarded a bus at the Sancti Spíritus interprovincial terminal, heading towards Holguín, as reported by activist Nelys Valdés on Facebook. Through communication with the Holguín terminal and the community's assistance, including efforts from young Camagüey native Yurileisy Caballero, who shared the situation on social media, her journey to the eastern city was tracked.

Amparo was intercepted at the Holguín terminal, where activist known as Noly Blak provided aid, eventually facilitating her return to Sancti Spíritus. It is anticipated that she will be accommodated in a nursing home there, according to the post. Her family in Pinar del Río was unable to provide her shelter due to damages inflicted on their home by a recent cyclone, as suggested by other messages on the platform.

"Thanks to all the followers who informed us and offered their help, it was incredible to witness such solidarity," expressed one of the operation's organizers. Special gratitude was extended to Yamilka Mora, who provided Amparo with food and transportation for her return. This incident, the first of its kind this year, highlights the Cuban community's organization amid the crisis, leveraging social media and support groups. "Amparo, we will welcome you as another daughter of our land, Sancti Spíritus," added the organizers, deeply appreciating the efforts of everyone who made the rescue possible.

According to the post, Amparo will soon be taken to a nursing home. Elderly Cubans are among those who suffer the most from the widespread crisis on the island. Many lack adequate food, medicine, and a decent place to live out their final years. The country has seen a rise in homelessness, with many of those affected being elderly individuals left without support.
