Cuban Government Hosts Another "Freedom Caravan" Amidst Fuel Crisis

Friday, January 3, 2025 by Felix Ortiz

Amidst Cuba's severe energy crisis, the government has chosen to organize another "Freedom Caravan," a symbolic event that reenacts the historic march of the Rebel Army in 1959. Sixty-six years after that triumphant journey, the Cuban administration has launched a new event that, according to TV Santiago, will cover "over 1,000 kilometers." On January 2, 2025, Cuban authorities kicked off the caravan with a ceremony in Santiago de Cuba, led by Communist Party officials José Ramón Monteagudo, Beatriz Johnson, and Manuel Falcón.

State-controlled social media channels declared that the initiative was essential as a "perpetual expression of the province's commitment and loyalty to its history," yet they neglected to mention the protests in Santiago against the endless blackouts caused by the fuel shortage. More than just a nod to the so-called "revolutionary struggle," this initiative has sparked discomfort and criticism among those grappling with severe hardships due to the lack of fuel.

In recent weeks, the country has witnessed endless lines of vehicles at gas stations, where drivers often wait up to 24 hours to refuel. In parts of Havana, queues have stretched over two to three days, leaving thousands of Cubans without access to gasoline. The scarcity of essential resources, combined with exorbitant black market prices, has fueled widespread discontent, particularly among those who rely on their vehicles for work, such as taxi drivers or those transporting the sick.

Rather than directly addressing the pressing issues affecting its citizens, the government seems more focused on organizing events that, while symbolic, fail to alleviate the country's dire situation. In December, the regime also prioritized political propaganda by organizing a march on Havana's Malecón, where reports on social media suggested that Cubans were coerced into participating.
