The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada has named the woman who was brutally attacked on Thursday in Santiago de Cuba. The assailant, believed to have mental health issues, slashed her face in broad daylight. The victim, identified as Yeli Iglesias Ramírez, is a mother and a devout Christian. Formerly a social worker, she now works as a vendor at a local café named La Maltera in the Artes y Oficios neighborhood, where the attack occurred. A neighbor described the wound as so severe that "even her molars were visible."

Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the attacker, but many locals describe him as someone who exploits his mental and substance abuse issues to evade accountability. A family member, speaking anonymously to Mayeta Labrada, did not excuse the violent act and admitted the man's drug use.

"This isn't his first crisis," the relative shared. "He's been admitted to the hospital more than four times due to drugs and becomes aggressive even with his family. Right after this incident, we called an ambulance, and they took him away. But the next day, they brought him back, saying there were no available beds, even though they know how severe his condition is. He's been hospitalized at Jagua several times and gets very aggressive."

Background of the Victim and the Incident Response

The journalist reflected on his past working relationship with Iglesias Ramírez, recalling her as a "fighting mother, a Christian, a former social worker, and a beautiful woman." He urged his followers to keep him updated on her health status.

In response to the event, an ambulance, multiple police patrols, and a special forces vehicle from the regime, known as the Black Berets, were dispatched to the scene to maintain order and prevent any vigilante justice. "The area is under military watch," Mayeta reported.

Witnesses from the onset of the attack claimed the aggressor is a psychiatric patient who was off his medication, leading to the outburst. Several online commenters mentioned that there is no known connection between the victim and her attacker.
