A tragic traffic accident on Thursday morning in Santa Cruz del Sur, Camagüey, claimed the life of a Cuban man who was the father of a young daughter. Ramón Chávez Águila, a resident of the Jacinto González neighborhood, was the sole fatality in the incident that also injured 63 individuals, including over 20 children.

Leandro Peña Gutiérrez, a Facebook user, shared a poignant image of the young man with his daughter. "Ramoncito is so far the only casualty from the Santa Cruz accident in Camagüey, leaving behind a little princess. He was affectionately called the Mony. His loss is deeply mourned," he noted.

Dozens of people, many of whom were friends and acquaintances, expressed their condolences to the family, particularly to his wife and mother. The accident occurred around 10:00 AM on January 2nd, when the driver of the private truck, Alberto Cruz Díaz, lost control of the vehicle at kilometer 71 on the road linking Camagüey to Santa Cruz del Sur, near El Francés.

Passengers who suffered severe injuries such as fractures in both upper and lower limbs were transported to Manuel Ascunce Provincial Hospital. Although surgeries were not required, some are under observation due to non-life-threatening thoracic and abdominal traumas.

As of Friday, over 20 minors were still recovering at Eduardo Agramonte Piña Pediatric Hospital, receiving specialized medical care. Numerous ambulances and emergency personnel from nearby hospitals responded promptly to the scene to assist the more than 60 injured victims.

The tragedy sparked a significant wave of solidarity among the locals, who flocked to the hospital to donate blood and offer support in any needed capacity. Authorities have stated that investigations into the causes of the accident are ongoing.
