Starting May 7, 2025, travelers flying within the United States will be required to present a Real ID-compliant identification in order to board domestic flights. This regulation, introduced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will also be necessary for entry into federal facilities and nuclear power plants, as reported by Telemundo Chicago.
The Real ID Act, enacted in 2005, aims to enhance the security of government-issued licenses and identification documents, making them more resistant to forgery. Real ID-compliant identifications are marked by a star in the upper right corner and cost the same as a standard license.
To obtain a Real ID, residents over the age of 18 must visit their state's Secretary of State office in person and provide documents that verify their identity, Social Security number, and residency, among other requirements. It's crucial to note that the process may vary from state to state, so it's recommended to check with local authorities for specific requirements.
Despite the deadline being postponed multiple times, authorities urge citizens not to delay acquiring their Real ID. As the deadline approaches, a surge in demand is anticipated, potentially leading to long lines and delays at processing offices.
"Travelers without a Real ID-compliant identification or another acceptable form of identification after the May 7, 2025 deadline could experience delays at airport security checkpoints," stated the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). They warned of possible advisories or even "progressive consequences" for those lacking compliant identification. "The federal agency would deny the individual access at that time and in all future instances unless the individual obtains a Real ID or presents an alternative acceptable form of identification," they added.
For those who prefer using their driver's license as their primary form of ID, obtaining a Real ID will be essential.
