The ongoing energy crisis in Cuba continues to burden the population, with widespread power outages reported due to the disconnection of eight thermoelectric units. These disconnections, resulting from breakdowns and scheduled maintenance, exacerbate the electricity generation shortfall, particularly during peak demand hours, according to the Unión Eléctrica's daily update on Facebook.

Thermoelectric Units Affected

Currently, the following units are experiencing breakdowns:

  • Units 5 and 6 of the Nuevitas Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Nuevitas).
  • Unit 3 of the Renté Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Renté).
  • Unit 2 of the Felton Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Felton).

The following units are under maintenance:

  • Unit 2 of the Santa Cruz Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Santa Cruz).
  • Units 3 and 4 of the Cienfuegos Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Cienfuegos).
  • Unit 5 of the Renté Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE Renté).

Additionally, 58 distributed generation plants are out of service due to fuel shortages, leading to an extra loss of 260 MW.

Energy Deficit and Extended Blackouts

Thermal generation limitations reached 263 MW on Sunday, and a 623 MW deficit is anticipated during peak hours this Tuesday, with an estimated impact of 693 MW. Yesterday, electricity supply was interrupted several times, peaking at a 767 MW shortfall at 18:20 hours, aligning with the peak demand.

The power cuts predominantly impact the central-eastern region of the country, where electricity transfers have failed to meet demand. On the previous day, the service was halted from 07:32 to 14:10 hours and again from 14:30 to 20:52.

Efforts to recover 50 MW in distributed plants have been insufficient, with projected availability for peak hours remaining low at 2127 MW against a maximum demand of 2700 MW.

This situation highlights the structural challenges within Cuba's energy system, characterized by outdated infrastructure, fuel shortages, and technical constraints, complicating a short-term solution. Meanwhile, blackouts continue to be a daily burden for millions of Cubans.
