Mexican Twins Gain TikTok Fame with Review of Palma Beer as "Cristal": "It's Good, But There's Better Out There"

Monday, January 6, 2025 by Edward Lopez

Isidoro and Benjamín Haber, the Mexican twins known on TikTok as "Si Somos Gemelos," have captivated their audience with engaging reviews and culinary adventures. Their latest critique took on Palma beer, a brand that mirrors Cuba's famed Cristal. In a recent video, they highlighted how Cristal is marketed outside Cuba as Palma due to trademark restrictions on the island. Sometimes, it even appears as Palma Cristal.

The twins, not claiming to be beer experts, expressed surprise when rating this beloved Cuban drink. They shared that, based on their experience, other beers have more robust flavors, suggesting that there are superior choices available. One twin commented, "I can really taste the hop flavors." The other added, "Palma is easy to drink and tastes good, but there are many better beers out there. It wouldn't be my pick at the supermarket."

"It's decent, but it doesn't take many risks and has a long way to go to be considered the best," the first brother continued. The duo rated Palma with a 75 out of 100, placing it 14th out of the 18 beers they've reviewed. Their personal favorites include Sapporo from Japan, Gallo from Guatemala, and Kronenbourg from France, while Peroni (Italy), Mahou (Spain), and Budlight (USA) round out their list.

Emphasizing their aim to entertain, the twins remarked, "It's a beer that does its job. And remember, we're not experts—just two regular guys trying a beer for the first time." With over four million TikTok followers, Isidoro and Benjamín enjoy exploring supermarkets as a top tourist attraction during their travels. Their platform is dedicated to sampling unique products worldwide.

During the pandemic, they turned their hobby into a medium for entertainment, responsible information, and even business. At 23, they find gastronomy a captivating avenue for social media content, delighting viewers and introducing them to flavors and textures they might never encounter otherwise.

Cristal beer, produced by Cervecería Bucanero SA in Holguín, Cuba, is a staple of Cuban culture. Known as "La Preferida de Cuba," it boasts a light, refreshing taste perfect for the island's tropical climate. Yet, in April 2023, BeerAdvocate ranked Cristal among the world's worst beers, scoring it a 65, deemed "poor." Over 30,000 beers surpassed Cristal in this ranking.

In Miami, Palma beer has stirred controversy. Though its branding imitates the iconic Cuban Cristal, Palma is Nicaraguan, imported to the U.S. by a California-based company. This has led to consumer confusion, with many initially believing it to be a Cuban product. In July 2021, Cuban-American entrepreneur Tony Haber acquired the Cristal trademark rights in Europe after the Cuban government failed to renew them. Consequently, the beer is now marketed in Miami as "Mi Cristal."

These developments highlight the complexities and disputes surrounding Cuban beer brands in the global market, reflecting varied perceptions and evaluations both on and off the island.
