A new retail store has been launched in Havana, allowing payments in Convertible Currency (MLC), with the Spanish group VIMA overseeing its management and supply. The establishment officially opened its doors on December 30th, located at the intersection of Infanta and Santa Marta streets in the Centro Habana municipality.
Unlike the recently inaugurated market at 3rd and 70th in Playa, where only cash dollars or cards linked to foreign currency accounts are accepted, this new store operates with MLC. As in other stores, cash payments are not accepted; transactions must be conducted using cards.
The Caribe Store Chain promoted the use of QR codes and Classic Cards on their social media platforms. "Our store offers this service as well. Additionally, we provide a 5% discount when using the Classic Card. Customers can purchase or recharge their cards directly in-store and check their balance with Enzona_BX, all accompanied by excellent service," the company stated on its Facebook page.
In response to a comment from a social media user, they had to acknowledge that each time a card is recharged, the customer loses 1 USD due to a tax imposed by Cadeca.
Cuban YouTuber known for his channel JSant TV visited the market and confirmed a well-stocked inventory, not limited to VIMA products, and noted that some items, such as cooking oil, are priced lower than on the street.
Last May, the Cuban government announced it would transfer the management of 20 stores to the Spanish group VIMA, which has been operating in Cuba for three decades. At that time, it was also mentioned that the Paseo market would be included in this agreement.
Mid-November saw the opening of a new MLC store in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, supplied by a Basque provider. The Amistad 26 market, at the corner of Avenida 26 and Zapata, will now be known as the Caribe-Berría minimarket, following a collaboration between the Caribe Store Chain and the Basque supplier Aldaketa.
