An early morning fire on Monday devastated the parking area of the "Mariana Grajales" Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, leaving five motorbikes completely destroyed and two others damaged. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

The province's health director, Dr. Juan José Pulido López, confirmed that four additional motorbikes escaped damage. However, the parking lot's roof sustained significant harm.

Official government communicator, Henry Omar Pérez, reported that the fire was swiftly contained through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of the Interior and Santa Clara's Fire Department. He also noted that the blaze damaged an internal combustion engine.

Pérez mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire, with findings to be shared in an official report soon. He emphasized the recent surge in similar incidents and urged the public to increase preventive measures, particularly regarding the handling and storage of motorbikes, whose electrical systems may be prone to short circuits.

The city of Santa Clara has witnessed several motorbike-related incidents, particularly fires causing significant material damage and raising public concern. One notable incident occurred on Sunday, January 5, 2025, when a motorbike ignited a fierce blaze in a garage in the Manuelita neighborhood. The fire affected several vehicles, including a Lada, a motorcycle, and two classic cars known as "almendrones." Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the material losses were substantial.

Another incident took place in April 2024, when a gasoline-powered motorbike caught fire on a street in the José Martí neighborhood. No injuries were reported, but the bike was completely destroyed. This was unusual, as electric bikes are typically more prone to catching fire in Cuba.

These incidents highlight the critical need for enhanced safety measures in the use and maintenance of both electric and combustion motorbikes to prevent accidents that could endanger lives and property.
