Monday, January 6, 2025 by Amelia Soto

An unfortunate road accident transpired yesterday afternoon in the town of Gaspar, situated in Cuba's Ciego de Ávila province, resulting in a motorcyclist being hospitalized. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash occurred at 1:28 p.m. when a National Revolutionary Police (PNR) Operational Guard vehicle failed to yield and collided with the motorcycle, as detailed by the Facebook page 'La Tijera'.

Despite being taken to the hospital, those at the scene mentioned that the motorcyclist was conscious and did not suffer from life-threatening injuries. Several police officers were dispatched to the accident site, and the involved police car was swiftly removed, sparking discussions among bystanders about the apparent haste to downplay the incident's visibility.

Witnesses claimed that the accident was attributed to the inattentiveness of the officer driving the Operational Guard vehicle, who was reportedly distracted at the moment of impact.

Incidents involving police vehicles are not uncommon on the island. In May 2024, a police patrol was part of a triple collision in Havana. Similarly, in October of the same year, a crash between a patrol car and a truck in Holguín led to injuries for the officers in the vehicle. Tragically, in June 2024, a young motorcyclist lost his life in Santiago de Cuba when struck by a police vehicle in a comparable incident.
