The opening of the Supermarket 3rd and 70 in Miramar, Playa, has sparked discussions regarding payment methods, as items are accessible only to those using cash in U.S. dollars, international credit cards, or the "Classic Card," which is unique to the Cuban banking system. In this setting, comedian Ulises Toirac voiced his disapproval of this latter option, highlighting its drawbacks and questioning its practicality, despite its new feature of foreign top-ups starting in March 2024.

Toirac took to Facebook to mock the limitations of the Classic Card, emphasizing that it only allows purchases at Cuban stores within the country and does not support online shopping. "You top it up with dollars, and it doesn't let you buy online; you can only shop in Cuban stores within Cuba," Toirac humorously commented, pointing out that this system is engineered by the Cuban regime to hoard dollars and keep them from leaving the country, unlike international cards.

The comedian further questioned the actual distinction between the dollars used with the Classic Card and those accepted at stores dealing in MLC (Freely Convertible Currency), echoing consumer frustration with the system. "And what's up with the MLC?" he added with his trademark sarcastic tone.

The introduction of the Classic Card has stirred controversy on the island, as its use is confined to certain establishments, excluding broader options like online shopping or transactions in freely convertible currency elsewhere. Toirac's criticism mirrors the sentiments of many Cubans who doubt the utility and efficiency of this new payment method amid a severe economic crisis.

Recently, the Cuban comedian ignited an engaging discussion on social media following news of the new supermarket's opening, where only dollar payments are accepted. The supermarket resides in the Gran Muthu Habana Hotel building, owned by GAESA, and is located directly across from the old 3rd and 70 Market, which now sells its products in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) but remains understocked.

Toirac did not hold back in condemning the growing disparity and dollarization of the Cuban economy, calling it "a slap in the face."

Understanding Cuba's Classic Card and Its Limitations

What is the Classic Card in Cuba?

Why has the Classic Card been criticized?

Critics argue that the Classic Card's limitations, such as restricting purchases to in-country stores and not allowing online shopping, reflect a mechanism by the Cuban government to control dollar flow within the nation.

How does the Classic Card differ from international cards?

Unlike international cards, the Classic Card is restricted to transactions within Cuba and does not facilitate online purchases, limiting consumer flexibility and access to broader markets.
