Farewell to Young Girl Who Died in Havana Domestic Accident

Tuesday, January 7, 2025 by Richard Morales

On Tuesday, Elinzzanith Paneque, a six-year-old girl who tragically lost her life following a gas canister explosion at her home in Havana, was laid to rest. Her nine-year-old brother, who was severely injured in the incident, is still fighting for his life.

A short video shared by activist Yankiel Fernández captured the poignant moment when the small, white-covered coffin was lowered into the ground, surrounded by family and close friends.

The young girl had been in the intensive care unit at Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital after she and her brother, Helinzzon Paneque, were rushed there following the tragic event last Thursday. Both children were initially reported to be in critical condition, but sadly, Elinzzanith succumbed to her injuries.

Ongoing Support for the Surviving Brother

Helinzzon continues his battle for survival, as reported by Fernández on Facebook this Monday. Fernández leads the humanitarian project "Aliento de Vida," which initiated a relief campaign to gather essential supplies to aid in the children’s recovery and support the family during this challenging time. They have asked for donations such as disposable diapers, burn creams, wet wipes, juices, yogurt, gelatin, and any other resources that people could spare. The campaign remains active to assist the recovery of the surviving child.

A Mother's Heartbreak

Suelen Chacón, the children's mother, shared an emotional farewell to her daughter, emphasizing that no mother should ever have to endure such a painful experience. She expressed regret for not being able to protect her little girl, whom she had assured that everything would be alright.

"A mother can have 20 children, but losing even one feels like the world is collapsing, like nothing else matters, like a huge part of you has been taken away. The breath goes," Chacón wrote in a message made public by Fernández.

"It's hard to go through or live with this situation. I thought she would pull through, but it wasn't meant to be. Just thinking she was only 6 years old and now she's gone... It's painful. A whole life ahead, full of challenges, goals to achieve, and dreams to fulfill," lamented Chacón, who recalled her daughter repeatedly saying she wanted to get better after the accident.

"No mother should face such a dark moment. I'd rather have my life taken from me than live through this," she added, expressing gratitude to everyone who has shown concern and offered help since the tragedy struck.
