The Cuban National Seismological Research Center (Cenais) has reported a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale occurring southeast of Caimanera in the Guantánamo province. According to information shared by CMKX Radio Bayamo on their Facebook page, the seismic event took place at 5:57 p.m., at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The precise epicenter was located at 18.991 degrees latitude and -74.381 degrees longitude, approximately 129 kilometers southeast of Caimanera. This area has experienced frequent seismic activity in recent years, including a record in 2024 for the island with almost 13,000 instances.

Although no damage or injuries have been reported, the quake caused concern among residents familiar with these occurrences due to the island's geological setting.

Second Earthquake in Less Than a Day

Earlier, Cenais reported another noticeable earthquake on Monday, January 8th, registering a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale. This tremor was recorded at 10:07 p.m., with its epicenter 25 kilometers southeast of Pilón in the Granma province, at a depth of 4 kilometers.

These earthquakes are part of the intense seismic activity affecting eastern Cuba in recent months. Following the significant quakes of magnitude 6.0 and 6.7 on November 10, 2024, there have been 9,032 aftershocks, 141 of which were noticeable.

Additionally, the December 23, 6.1 magnitude quake led to over 400 aftershocks, three of which were also felt.

Response and Precautionary Measures

While no injuries or damage have been reported, Cenais has urged the public to remain calm and adhere to local authorities' instructions. The eastern region remains particularly susceptible to such natural events due to its geographical position.

The significance of earthquake preparedness and staying informed through official channels is underscored, aiming to minimize risks and protect lives in the event of major emergencies.

Understanding Cuba's Seismic Activity

How common are earthquakes in eastern Cuba?

Eastern Cuba is subject to frequent seismic activity due to its geological location, with thousands of occurrences reported annually.
