In a recent operation, law enforcement in Matanzas successfully confiscated a handcrafted shotgun from an individual with a substantial criminal background in the Pueblo Nuevo area. The suspect, Leoner Michel Matos, has a history of serious offenses including assault, burglary, and sexual assault, as reported by the pro-government Facebook page “Con Todos La Victoria.”

The report disclosed that the shotgun, along with two cartridges, was located in Matos's residence, lacking the necessary legal documentation. This discovery was made on January 7th, following an investigation that directed authorities to the suspect's home.

Leoner Michel Matos was apprehended at the scene and is currently in custody, facing charges related to illegal possession of firearms. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of access to homemade weapons, a challenge that frequently eludes the stringent controls of the Cuban police.

In a related incident last December, a Cuban national was arrested in Colón, Matanzas, after allegedly committing a burglary while armed. The suspect, Ediel Jesús Prado Morales, carried out the theft in the early hours of December 2nd.

The Cuban government has previously acknowledged a troubling rise in violent crime across the island, including the increased use of firearms. According to statements by Colonel Eddy Sierra Arias, head of the National Revolutionary Police's General Directorate, criminal activities are linked to various factors, such as smuggling from abroad, drug trafficking, and the movement of both national and foreign citizens, all of which negatively affect the nation’s security.
