Claudia Sheinbaum Skips Trump's Inauguration: Implications for U.S.-Mexico Relations

Thursday, January 16, 2025 by Robert Castillo

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has announced that she will not be present at Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony scheduled for January 20, 2025. During her regular morning press briefing, famously known as La Mañanera, Sheinbaum calmly stated, “No, but nothing's wrong,” referring to her absence at the event marking the beginning of the U.S. president-elect's second term.

The invitation to the ceremony was extended to the Mexican government through the usual diplomatic channels, emphasizing the attendance of ambassadors from various countries rather than heads of state. Representing Mexico will be Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma, who pointed out that it is common practice in the United States to prefer diplomatic representatives over state leaders for such events.

Sheinbaum’s decision does not signal a breakdown in the bilateral relationship. The Mexican leader has affirmed her belief that the relationship between Mexico and the United States "will be good, based on respect and dialogue." She has highlighted the significance of economic cooperation, citing the benefits of the USMCA trade agreement and the substantial economic contributions of Mexican immigrants to the U.S. economy.

Sheinbaum has already initiated discussions with President-elect Trump on pressing issues such as migration, fentanyl trafficking, and North American trade relations. She emphasized that her administration has strategies to address the migration concerns raised by Trump and to avert a trade war between the two nations.

The inauguration, where Trump will assume office for a second time, is set to take place at the iconic Capitol in Washington, D.C. The event will commence at 11:00 a.m. CT under the theme “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise.” While the protocol typically excludes foreign leaders, an invitation has been extended to Chinese President Xi Jinping, amidst ongoing trade tensions between the two countries. Additionally, Santiago Abascal, leader of the Spanish VOX party, will be in attendance.

Also expected to attend is Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who has confirmed his presence. The guest list is notable for including former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, although he must obtain special permission to leave Brazil due to ongoing legal investigations.
