Havana's Iconic Coppelia Ice Cream Parlor May Reopen Soon with Adjusted Prices

Thursday, January 16, 2025 by Felix Ortiz

The renowned Coppelia ice cream parlor, often referred to as the "Cathedral of Ice Cream," is expected to welcome customers again before the end of January. An employee informed CubaNet that the price per scoop will be 25 Cuban pesos, a hike deemed "justifiable" due to the soaring costs of raw materials.

According to the news outlet, this update was shared with staff during a recent meeting with the president of the Grupo Empresarial del Comercio Interior de La Habana. During this gathering, it was conveyed that the Party and government officials of Havana have set a one-week deadline to paint, update furniture, and make necessary adjustments to reopen the facility. Although no specific reopening date was given, it is anticipated to occur before month's end.

Besides the price increase, efforts are underway to reintroduce accompaniments like cookies and chocolates, following negotiations with related companies. Plans are also in place to update staff uniforms and enhance the overall aesthetics of the venue.

State Control Remains Despite Rumors

Contrary to circulating rumors, the Grupo Empresarial del Comercio Interior president refuted claims that Coppelia might be handed over to a small or medium-sized enterprise. She confirmed that while collaborations with such entities might occur, the ice cream parlor will remain under state management, as emphasized by CubaNet.

Since its closure in November 2024, Coppelia has only been selling packages of sweet cookies and four-liter tubs of ice cream for 1,720 pesos, while its facilities have stayed shut. The shutdown was driven by a shortage of essential ingredients like milk and sugar, which led to the closure of this iconic establishment located at the bustling intersection of 23 and L in Havana's Vedado district, reported 14 y Medio. In December, passersby witnessed the decline of this once emblematic Havana landmark with a heavy heart.
