Kristi Noem, the current Secretary of Homeland Security under President Donald Trump's administration, spearheaded a series of large-scale operations on Tuesday in New York. These efforts focused on apprehending undocumented immigrants with criminal records.

During one of these operations, Noem staunchly defended the authorities' actions. In a controversial tweet, she declared, "We're cleaning up the streets," sparking outrage across various communities.

The Secretary also divulged details of the operation through a video of the arrest, emphasizing her commitment to public safety. "Police operation in New York. A foreign criminal with charges of kidnapping, assault, and robbery is now in custody," she stated.

Shortly before the first images of the operations were released, Noem shared a video outlining her mission at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security: to maintain safety in the United States. "Under my leadership, this department will protect the American people with integrity and honesty, as President Trump prioritizes national security," she argued.

After being confirmed by the Senate on January 25 with a vote of 59 in favor and 34 against, Noem issued a statement reiterating her commitment to "secure our southern border and fix our immigration system."

She also emphasized that her focus would include identifying and preventing terrorist threats, as well as providing rapid assistance and relief during disasters for Americans in need, according to The Associated Press.

As Secretary of Homeland Security, Noem oversees key agencies such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Secret Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Her appointment reinforces the Trump administration's approach towards stricter immigration policies and enhanced border security.

Before taking on her current role, she served as the 33rd Governor of South Dakota from 2019 to 2025, becoming the first woman to lead that state. Throughout her career, Noem has been known for her advocacy of gun rights and her opposition to environmental regulations that she believes could harm the agricultural economy.

Alongside her political career, she has managed her family's farm and ranch in South Dakota, which has shaped her views on agricultural and economic policies.
