A young Cuban man was tragically stabbed to death on Sunday at the entrance of his home in Central Havana while attempting to defend an elderly gentleman from harassment by a group of youths. The victim, identified as José Javier Sigarroa Ávila, affectionately known as JJ, was brutally attacked by individuals who remain unidentified, according to reports circulating on social media.
Eyewitnesses and various sources have reported that JJ suffered more than a dozen stab wounds while trying to protect the elder from assault in the lower levels of his building, located on San Rafael Boulevard. As of now, the identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, and there have been no arrests by the police.
The incident has sent shockwaves through JJ's close-knit community of family, friends, and acquaintances. He was widely regarded as a kind-hearted, friendly, and exemplary son. "This can't be true, my nephew, who took the most beautiful thing from you, your precious life; a good son, a good brother, a good friend, with the greatest humility; who took your beautiful life, what a pain for that wonderful mother who raised and loved him with much sacrifice. May God comfort that mother," wrote Clara Rivero in an emotional tribute to her nephew.
Another friend, Leandro Leira, expressed his grief on Facebook: "Life is unfair, yesterday we were laughing, and today I have this devastating news, still feel like I'm dreaming, man, you left many people who love you in shock, who can't believe you're gone." Yordys Piedra, a childhood friend of JJ, shared heartfelt words: "My brother, how sad I feel, how sad to see you like this, what sorrow. I can't stop crying, brother [...] I can't believe your end was like this, I don't accept it [...]. We lost a good guy, a good brother, a good friend... To all my childhood brothers, take care, news like this leaves the world sad. [...] JJ, watch over the family from heaven, bro. Today the earth is sad because a good human being has left, and the sky is joyful because it opened its doors to an angel, a great brother."
Amidst the mourning, many have voiced their outrage over the crime, demanding the immediate capture of those involved in this tragic event.
This Monday also marked another violent death in the country, involving Yakin Vidal Lobaina in Morón, Ciego de Ávila. He was fatally wounded during an argument over a soccer match in a local park, just a day before his birthday.
