Homeless Cuban in Miami Reunites with Mother and Receives Unexpected Support

Wednesday, January 29, 2025 by Albert Rivera

A Cuban man who had spent four years living on the streets of Miami has received assistance from former neighbors and childhood friends who learned of his plight after a video of him surfaced online last week. Yoel Carmona lost his identification documents following an accident in Orlando, where he fell from the eighth floor of a building. Without papers and in poor health, he was seeking help to change his circumstances and reconnect with his mother in Cuba, with whom he had lost contact.

His story came to light thanks to a TikTok user known as Conducta, who shares stories of homeless individuals in Miami in an effort to help them. A former classmate managed to track him down, took him to a barber, and is now looking after him. Additionally, another old friend reached out and assisted him in finding his mother, who had relocated to a different neighborhood in Havana.

"After so long, Yoel finally saw his mom, even if it was just through a video call. The emotion was overwhelming, and joy filled his heart. It was a reunion that defied distance," stated the video creator.

Thanks to the kindness of these individuals, Yoel plans to recover his documents and obtain proper medical care. He mentioned that he also had money in a bank account. "I've never been like this, I've never seen myself in this situation. I don’t know why this happened to me now. What I really need is a place to live and to be able to take care of my sick mother in Cuba and communicate, because the phone I had was from the government, and it seems they blocked it since I don’t know anything about my mom," he expressed in last week's video.

Previously, he recounted how he spent a year living in the backyard of a man's house before being kicked out and left without his documents, including his and his mother’s birth certificates. In the comments section, several internet users claimed to know him from Cuba, identifying him as a resident of Boyeros, a municipality in Havana, and noted that his mother and other relatives are still living on the island.
