Marco Rubio Warns Zelenski About His Stance on Trump and U.S. Relations

Friday, February 21, 2025 by Olivia Torres

During a recent interview with journalist Catherine Herridge on the social media platform X, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stern warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski regarding his approach to relations with the United States, particularly concerning former President Donald Trump. Rubio accused Zelenski of being "two-faced" in his dealings with both the U.S. and Trump.

Rubio highlighted discussions about mining rights with Zelenski, stating, "We talked about forming a joint venture because we believe we need a security guarantee." He expressed the need for Zelenski to return a portion of the $200 billion in taxpayer money that has been provided to Ukraine. Rubio recounted, "He said, 'Sure, I need to review it through the legislative power.' Two days later, I read that he rejected the deal. That's not what happened in that meeting."

The Secretary of State also voiced his frustration over Ukraine's perceived lack of gratitude towards the U.S., asserting that "Ukraine does not directly affect the daily lives of Americans, and there should be some kind of appreciation for that." Additionally, he openly criticized Zelenski's public statements regarding Trump, noting that Zelenski's accusations of Trump spreading misinformation could backfire.

"When we see him accusing the president of misinformation, that's highly counterproductive. President Trump will not tolerate that. He will not be fooled. I hope Zelenski is not trying to deceive the United States; that wouldn't be productive here," Rubio stated.

These comments come amid rising tensions in U.S. politics concerning the future of support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. With Trump back in the White House, the relationship between Kyiv and Washington is becoming increasingly strained. The visible closeness between Trump and Vladimir Putin recently, as they stage a dialogue that seems aimed at restoring commercial and diplomatic ties, adds to this tension.

In this context, Rubio suggested that the Ukrainian leader exercise greater caution in his communication and diplomacy with the new Trump administration, particularly with the president himself.
