Is It True? Cuban Woman on the Island Addresses Hair Complaints of Emigrants in the U.S.

Sunday, February 23, 2025 by Grace Ramos

A Cuban woman living on the island, known on TikTok as Izzy (@izzys33), has found herself unable to ignore the numerous videos circulating on social media where women, particularly Cuban emigrants, express frustration over the condition of their hair since moving to the United States.

In her video, Izzy highlights that many Cuban women in the U.S. have reported noticing significant hair issues, such as excessive shedding and dryness, which they claim were not problems back in Cuba. "Women in the U.S. are saying: 'My hair is ruined, it's falling out, it's dry. I had better hair in Cuba.' I'm going to test this out by washing my hair with cooperative shampoo to see if it's really as good as they say," she mentioned in her recording. Izzy further noted that many women criticize well-known hair care brands, alleging that "everything is worthless."

"I don't know who to believe; back home, they had bad hair, and now I see them with good hair saying it's bad," she added. The notion of testing Cuban shampoo against U.S. products sparked a flurry of comments on TikTok. Many women living abroad agreed that the issue might not be with the shampoo itself, but rather with the water in the United States.

"In my experience, it was the opposite. My hair improved a lot here, and I use the cheapest shampoo. It's nonsense," one user commented. However, others supported the theory that the water quality in the U.S. negatively impacts hair health. "It's not just Cubans; many women here say the same. I don't know if it's the water or what, but the hair falls out terribly, regardless of the shampoo," another user remarked.

One of the most repeated arguments is that U.S. water has high levels of chlorine and minerals, which could be detrimental to hair. "I had to buy a shower filter to soften the water," shared one user, while another added, "Here, hair falls out due to stress and water; that's the pure reality."

Some even suggest that the real culprit is the fast-paced lifestyle of emigrants. "It's the stress of this country. No matter what shampoo you use, stress will make your hair fall out from the roots," a follower asserted.

The debate over whether hair deterioration is caused by water, stress, or product differences remains unresolved, yet it has brought to light a shared experience among many female migrants. For now, Izzy has promised to share the results of her Cuban shampoo experiment in an upcoming video, creating considerable anticipation among her followers.
