The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) has released a Special Alert No. 1, warning of impending rain, showers, and thunderstorms in the western and central regions of Cuba in the coming hours, which may lead to flooding in low-lying areas. According to the INSMET bulletin issued at 9 AM this Sunday, "the likelihood of showers, rain, and thunderstorms will increase in the western part of the country starting tomorrow afternoon, Monday 24th, and from the night and early morning of Tuesday 25th in the central region."

The alert further states that "rainfall could become heavy and intense in some locations, with strong gusts accompanying the thunderstorms. Due to the high volume of precipitation, flooding could occur in low-lying and poorly drained areas." This weather pattern is attributed to the rapid movement of a cold front, advancing over the western and central parts of Cuba. It is expected to reach the eastern provinces by Tuesday afternoon, albeit in a weakened state.

Despite the advance notice, the announcement has sparked immediate concern among thousands of Cubans whose homes are ill-prepared to withstand the impending heavy rains.

Current Weather Conditions in Cuba

For today's weather outlook, INSMET forecasts partially cloudy skies across much of the national territory, with stable conditions expected to persist throughout most of the day. Minimum temperatures will range from 20°C to 23°C, while maximum temperatures will lie between 26°C and 29°C, providing a warm climate typical of this time of year.

Northeasterly to easterly winds are anticipated, with speeds varying between 10 and 25 km/h, which may create a refreshing sensation in some coastal areas. Regarding sea conditions, rough seas are predicted along the northeastern coastline, decreasing to moderate waves by the afternoon. In the northwestern coast and the area from Cabo Cruz to Punta de Maisí, moderate waves are expected throughout the day.
