The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has ramped up its immigration enforcement efforts after an agreement championed by Governor Ron DeSantis. In collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FHP conducted an operation in Gadsden County.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced on social media that during the operation, 58 traffic stops were executed, leading to eight arrests. Among those detained, six were identified as undocumented immigrants, some of whom already had deportation orders. Authorities underscored that these initiatives aim to enforce immigration laws and hold accountable those entering the country illegally.

Earlier in February, DeSantis expanded the responsibilities of the state's Highway Patrol. Through an agreement with ICE, this security force will now also be tasked with immigration-related duties, such as identifying and detaining undocumented immigrants at checkpoints. This initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle illegal immigration, reflecting a resolute stance on border security. The plan also involves increased cooperation between local and federal authorities to expedite deportations.

It has recently been revealed that the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) will also receive training to assist ICE in identifying and detaining undocumented immigrants. Another series of immigration policies bolstering the enforcement of state immigration laws, driven by DeSantis, includes granting greater authority to state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws. Additionally, special legislative sessions are being called to align state policies with federal immigration initiatives.

These actions demonstrate a strong stance against illegal immigration and aim to strengthen collaboration between local and federal authorities in migration control.
