The lifeless body of César Valentín Pérez García was discovered Tuesday around noon in a river at Songo La Maya, known locally as "El Saltadero." Witnesses reported that the young man had jumped into the river on Monday and never resurfaced.
Images shared by journalist Yosmany Mayeta depicted the tense atmosphere as dozens of people gathered by the river while divers and acquaintances of César searched for his body. The discovery left family members, present at the scene, utterly devastated by the young man's untimely death.
Witnesses who were with César at the time of the incident quickly alerted the authorities in Santiago. However, according to accounts from witnesses interviewed by Mayeta, the authorities did not arrive until the following morning, and they brought "only two divers" with them.
The Fire Department explained that their regulations prohibit nighttime searches to ensure the safety of their personnel. Despite this, César's family, friends, and neighbors refused to leave the riverbank throughout the night and continued the search using their resources.

Several neighbors pointed out the insufficient presence of rescuers and the lack of resources to handle such situations. Additionally, some criticized those who recorded the family's grief instead of offering help during such a distressing time.
