The wife of a Cuban man battling a brain tumor has turned to social media, pleading for financial assistance to fund his medical treatment in Guyana, where they currently reside. Yanitza Pérez has reached out to the Cuban community, asking for support for her husband, José Luis Hernández Segura, who recently turned 28 and has been diagnosed with an oligodendroglioma, a grade 1 tumor with low malignancy.
Hernández requires a radiotherapy regimen, with an estimated cost of $6,000 at a private hospital in the South American nation. Pérez took to Facebook groups to share her plea, providing details about her husband's condition and the medical care he has received since they moved to Guyana five months ago.
She recounted that a few months back, Hernández began experiencing seizures. On December 30, he visited a public hospital where various tests, including MRIs and X-rays, revealed the presence of a brain tumor. A craniotomy was performed in January at that facility, but the surgeons were only able to remove 50% of the tumor.
According to Pérez, their oncologist recently advised that Hernández urgently needs radiotherapy, available only in private hospitals for a fee they cannot afford. "We are desperate," she said. "We considered seeking help in Cuba, but given the current situation there and the risks associated with flying due to his condition, it's not a viable option."
"Please, help me share this message," Pérez urged. "If you know of any organizations that could assist us, we're alone here, and I'm the only one working."
The appeal has been circulated by numerous individuals on Facebook, in hopes of gathering the necessary funds for Hernández's treatment.
