Sandro Castro: "I Believed We Were Equal, But We Are Unequal"

Thursday, February 27, 2025 by Isabella Rojas

Sandro Castro, the grandson of Cuba's dictator Fidel Castro, recently released a video mocking the criticism he has faced for his lavish lifestyle amid widespread poverty in Cuba. In the footage, Sandro and a friend named David, both seemingly intoxicated, exchange nonsensical and incoherent remarks.

"I believed we were equality, but we are inequality, David," Sandro stated, ridiculing a fellow Cuban who earlier highlighted the false class equality that Fidel Castro purportedly established in his era. "And let me tell you something clear, in perfection lies imperfection, David, because those who strive for a perfect life become slaves to vanity and ultimately aren't happy themselves," he added.

At another point in the clip, Sandro shows off a bottle of Cristal beer, boasting about finally finding one, to which his friend responds by mentioning he found ketchup. "But watch out for my friend the tarantula, she's got a lot of venom," the dictator's grandson concludes.

This week, Sandro jumped on the viral trend of Kendrick Lamar's song "Not Like Us" in a rather unique way: by wasting Cristal beer at the entrance of his bar, Efe, located in El Vedado. Such an act of egotism and insensitivity is striking, given that Cristal, despite being a national alcoholic beverage, is scarcely available in Cuban markets, making it a luxury item.

In the video, Sandro is clad entirely in Nike apparel—sweatshirt, pants, and shoes. As he dances, he approaches the camera with beers in hand, shaking them until the foam spills out. "Enjoy, buddy, let the world see the class equality your grandfather invented," read one of the comments on his Instagram post.

Bar Efe is a venue where Sandro often indulges in arrogance and folly. It was the site of his birthday celebration on December 5th, marked by an exclusive party that stirred considerable controversy. Another video that sparked outrage on social media was his extravagant Valentine's Day greeting on February 14th.

In a display of incoherence, Sandro appeared before the camera holding two roses wrapped in plastic—one red, one yellow—crossed over his chest while delivering a message to his followers. Just weeks earlier, he was seen partying on the same day Cuba observed an Official Mourning for 13 soldiers who died in Holguín, showcasing a blatant disregard for national grief.
