Zelensky Acknowledges War's End is Distant; Trump Responds Harshly

In a recent exchange, former U.S. President Donald Trump responded critically to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky had expressed on Sunday that any agreement to end the war remains "very, very far away," emphasizing the necessity of U.S. involvement in any future resolution.

Trump was evidently displeased with Zelensky's remarks, claiming that the Ukrainian leader's stance does not contribute to resolving the conflict. Through his platform, Truth Social, Trump labeled Zelensky's comments as "the worst statement Zelensky could have made," warning, "The United States won't endure this much longer!"

Furthermore, Trump implied that Zelensky lacks genuine intentions to pursue peace as long as Western support continues. "This guy doesn't want peace while he's backed by the U.S. and Europe," Trump remarked.

Adding to the discourse, Elon Musk on X stated, "Zelensky wants an eternal war, a relentless grinder. It's perverse."

While attending a summit in London organized by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to bolster European support for Ukraine, Zelensky underscored the significance of collaboration with Washington, even amidst the political uncertainties in the U.S. "I believe our relationship (with the United States) will persist because it's more than a sporadic relationship," he noted, highlighting the alliance forged since the onset of the Russian invasion.

Zelensky stressed that "Ukraine has a partnership strong enough with the United States of America" to ensure continued military and financial support, despite recent tensions with Trump. His comments came amid mounting international pressure to explore diplomatic solutions to the conflict.

When questioned about a new European initiative aimed at achieving peace, Zelensky responded cautiously, "We are discussing initial steps today, and until they are documented, I wouldn't like to elaborate on them." Nonetheless, he maintained that any resolution must adhere to essential principles: "The peace we envisage for the future must be fair, honest, and, most importantly, sustainable."

These tensions arise as the White House has expressed a desire for Zelensky to show greater openness to potential concessions to end the fighting. However, the Ukrainian leader has resisted such pressures, insisting on the need for security guarantees from Washington.

Additionally, Zelensky announced on Sunday his readiness to sign an agreement with the United States concerning his country's mineral resources. This declaration was made during the London Summit, where Ukraine received support from European partners in seeking conditions for a ceasefire with security guarantees.

Zelensky expressed his willingness to meet again with Trump to finalize the agreement, which had been suspended following a tense debate at the White House last week. In an interview with the British press before leaving the UK, the Ukrainian leader acknowledged that his confrontation with Trump and Vice President JD Vance did not facilitate peace, though he declined to apologize for his position. "I wanted Ukraine's position to be clear and unambiguous," Zelensky emphasized, confirming that if both parties are ready, the agreement will soon be finalized.
