President Donald Trump has ramped up his stance against student protests at American universities, threatening to withdraw federal funding from institutions that allow illegal demonstrations and promising severe actions against participants.

"All federal funding will be HALTED for any college, school, or university that permits illegal protests," Trump declared on Truth Social. "Agitators will be imprisoned or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be expelled permanently or, depending on the offense, arrested," he continued.

The president concluded his statement with "No masks!" which in this context could carry a symbolic meaning beyond the literal use of face coverings. It might be interpreted as a ban on anonymity during protests, as many demonstrators cover their faces with masks, balaclavas, bandanas, etc., which are sometimes linked to violent protests or disturbances. (Some states have laws prohibiting face coverings during demonstrations.)

Figuratively, this could also be a call for "transparency" and opposition to radical movements. By saying there will be "no masks," Trump is asserting that agitators and protesters cannot hide behind political or ideological movements to evade legal consequences.

These statements follow the announcement of a federal task force on antisemitism, which plans to visit ten university campuses that have reported antisemitic incidents since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Among the scrutinized institutions are Columbia University, George Washington University, Harvard, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Northwestern University, and the Universities of California in Los Angeles and Berkeley, Minnesota, and Southern California.

These measures underscore the Trump administration's firm stance against student demonstrations it deems illegal and aim to bolster oversight on antisemitism within the country's educational institutions, particularly targeting "leftist and anti-American colleges and universities."
