Trump Calls for Global Nuclear Disarmament: "The Power of These Weapons is Insane"

Friday, March 7, 2025 by Charlotte Gomez

Former President Donald Trump has called for global nuclear disarmament, urging the United States, Russia, and China to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. "It would be fantastic if everyone got rid of their nuclear weapons. I know that Russia and we have the most nuclear weapons by far. China will have a similar amount in four or five years. It would be fantastic if we could all denuclearize because the power of nuclear weapons is insane," Trump stated in a video posted on the social media platform X.

The proposal comes three weeks after Trump emphasized the need to restart nuclear arms control talks, particularly with Russia and China, during an Oval Office statement. He expressed a desire for significant reductions in military budgets among the three powers and lamented the vast sums being spent on modernizing nuclear arsenals. "There is no reason for us to be building entirely new nuclear weapons; we already have so many," he remarked.

Trump, who had previously addressed the issue of denuclearization during his first term, highlighted that massive military spending on nuclear weapons could be redirected toward more productive initiatives. "You could destroy the world 50 times, 100 times. And here we are building new nuclear weapons, and they are building nuclear weapons," he said, pointing to the increasing expenditures by the U.S., Russia, and China on their respective arsenals.

During his comments, Trump also predicted that China would soon achieve a nuclear capability comparable to that of the United States and Russia, with a formidable nuclear capacity expected within five or six years. "If these weapons were ever used, it would likely be the apocalypse," he warned.

The former president stated that once conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine are resolved, his goal would be to convene meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss reducing the military budgets of the three nations. "One of the first meetings I want to have is with President Xi of China and President Putin of Russia. And I want to say, 'Let's cut our military budget in half.' And we can do it. And I think we will be able to do it," he declared.

Trump also recalled his unsuccessful attempts during his first term to involve China in nuclear arms control negotiations when the United States and Russia sought to extend the New START treaty. Currently, Russia has suspended its participation in the agreement, while both countries continue extensive programs to modernize their Cold War-era nuclear arsenals.
