On Tuesday, Cubans on the island came together to donate A+ blood to support the transfer of 10-year-old Damir Ortiz Ramírez to the United States. Damir is battling both neurofibromatosis type 1 and acute leukemia. In response to an urgent plea for platelet donations to stabilize the boy before his air ambulance flight to Miami, citizens from various parts of Cuba gathered to donate at Havana's Blood Bank, located at the junction of 23rd and 2nd streets in Vedado.
The campaign gained momentum following a video by activist Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia and a live broadcast revealing that the Institute of Hematology and Immunology reported a shortage of A+ blood needed for Damir's treatment. The community rapidly mobilized, and with the assistance of neighbors and Dr. Miguel Ángel Ruano Sánchez, head of the Cuban Free Medical Guild, an operation was organized to collect donations.
Initially, the Blood Bank refused to process the donations, citing a lack of snacks and technicians. However, after attendees began sharing the situation on social media, the institution's management announced that blood extractions would proceed, as reported by activist Yamilka Laffita, known as Lara Crofs on Facebook. "Thank you for the courage to stay there despite the consequences," she expressed. This act of solidarity is part of a series of efforts that have enabled Damir’s family to meet the requirements for his transfer to the United States, where he will receive specialized treatment.
Within a few hours, Cubans both on the island and abroad raised more than $45,000 to cover the cost of the air ambulance that will transport the child and his mother, Eliannis Ramírez, to Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. On Monday, an individual also offered a $300,000 backup fund to meet the plane's requirements.
Recently, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba approved a humanitarian visa allowing the boy to receive urgent medical attention abroad. The campaign continues to gather support, showcasing the unity of Cubans in times of crisis. "Stand tall! Our solidarity drives us. Let’s keep fighting until Damir is well," the activist concluded, urging Cubans to remain steadfast in their support.
