On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he has "earnestly" requested Russian President Vladimir Putin to ensure the safety of Ukrainian soldiers who find themselves surrounded by Russian forces in the Kursk region. Speaking through his Truth Social platform, Trump described his discussions with Putin as "very good and productive," expressing optimism about the potential end of the war in Ukraine.
However, he cautioned that "right now, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are completely encircled by the Russian army and are in a precarious and vulnerable position." Trump stated, "I have firmly asked President Putin to spare these lives. It would be a horrific massacre, unseen since World War II. God bless them all!"
Responding to the former U.S. leader's appeal, Putin assured that Russia "understands" the humanitarian request and promised humane treatment to Ukrainian soldiers if they choose to surrender. "Should they lay down their arms and surrender, their lives will be guaranteed, and they will be treated with dignity in accordance with international law," Putin announced during a meeting with the Russian Security Council.
Nevertheless, the Kremlin leader accused Ukrainian forces of committing "numerous crimes against the civilian population" in Kursk, a region occupied by Kiev in August 2024, where Russian troops have recently launched a significant offensive. Putin stressed that to meet Trump's request, Ukraine's military leadership must order their troops to surrender in Kursk.
Ukraine announced last Tuesday its willingness to accept an end to hostilities for 30 days or permanently. On Thursday, a U.S. delegation led by White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff held discussions in Moscow with Putin to explore a 30-day ceasefire proposal, previously agreed upon in Saudi Arabia between Washington and Kiev.
Putin expressed readiness to accept the truce but warned of "issues in its implementation and verification," suggesting the necessity of direct talks with Trump. Meanwhile, the situation in Kursk remains dire, with Ukrainian troops encircled and under intense military pressure. Even President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Thursday that the situation for his soldiers is extremely "delicate."
