Díaz-Canel's Security Detail During Cuban Travels

Saturday, March 15, 2025 by Hannah Aguilar

In the midst of Cuba's worsening transportation crisis—characterized by severe shortages of fuel, parts, and funding—Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel benefits from an exclusive security convoy. This includes at least three BMW SUVs and a larger vehicle dedicated solely to him and his security team.

A video shared on the Facebook page of user Alexander Cárdenas reveals that Díaz-Canel is accompanied by around eight individuals solely focused on ensuring his safety. This entourage is a fixture during his domestic travels, where a significant security operation is always evident as the regime's representative moves through various municipalities and towns, attempting to project an image of closeness with the people.

The video, circulating on social media, highlights once more how Díaz-Canel prioritizes his own security over the populace's well-being. Encircled by security agents, he is seen briefly greeting citizens before quickly retreating into his transport vehicle. Meanwhile, other officers position themselves in front of those filming and greeting the leader, preventing any direct approach. This is not the only footage showcasing the limited interaction Díaz-Canel has with Cubans.

Across different regions of the country, a consistent pattern emerges: Díaz-Canel engages in short conversations with local officials, offers hurried greetings to some residents, then swiftly boards his vehicle, with little to no dialogue with the citizens. The stringent security measures prevent the public from freely approaching the leader, severely restricting any spontaneous contact.

Such security displays are commonplace during visits to various areas, where the government seeks to reinforce its narrative of closeness with the populace. In practice, however, there is strict control over the leader's public image, minimizing any chance for genuine public expression.
