The United States Embassy in Havana issued a security alert this Saturday following a widespread blackout that hit the entire island on Friday, caused by a malfunction at one of the country's main power plants. As of 11:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 15, electricity services had not yet been restored, and no estimated date for recovery has been announced. Additionally, reports indicate issues with internet and mobile phone services, further complicating communication on the island, according to the embassy's statement posted on Facebook.

"Emergency services are expected to continue operating, but all U.S. citizens in Cuba or those planning to travel to Cuba should remain informed and plan accordingly," the statement added. It also emphasized that Cuba's power grid is "increasingly unstable with multiple power outages occurring across the country since October 18, 2024," warning that "the electrical system remains vulnerable, with additional disruptions happening more frequently and lasting longer."

The embassy provided emergency contact information for U.S. citizens: Phone: +(53) (7) 839-4100 and Email: acshavana@state.gov. The previous day, Cuba's Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that the general disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) was due to a malfunction at the Diezmero substation, resulting in a massive loss of electricity generation in the western part of the island and, consequently, the total collapse of the system. Efforts are currently underway to restore service.

Since October 2024, Cuba has experienced numerous power outages, both planned and unexpected, impacting the population and key sectors such as commerce and healthcare. According to citizen reports on social media, electricity failures were noted in Havana, Guantánamo, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín, and Las Tunas, among other provinces.
