In a recent update, Cuban authorities have declared the gradual restoration of the country's National Electric System (NES) following a widespread blackout that lasted over 48 hours. Engineer Lázaro Guerra Hernández explained on the Buenos Días program that connectivity has been reestablished from Havana to Guantánamo, with connections to Pinar del Río and Artemisa still pending.

Several power generation units, including Guiteras, Renté 3, Santa Cruz block 3, and Mariel unit 8, are in the process of being restarted. Meanwhile, Energás Boca de Jaruco has already commenced operations, contributing 935 MW to the system. The National Electric Union (UNE) reports that 973 MW are currently operational, with the NES now interconnected nationwide.

Artemisa and Pinar del Río are operating on microsystems and will be linked to the NES once the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant is fully operational. Additional units are being prepared to start, aiming to gradually enhance the country's power coverage.

In Havana, areas within the municipalities of Boyeros, Guanabacoa, Centro Habana, Marianao, Cerro, 10 de Octubre, La Lisa, Playa, San Miguel del Padrón, and Arroyo Naranjo have regained electrical service, addressing a demand of 68 MW—approximately 19% of the capital's customers. The Havana Electric Company is diligently working to restore power citywide and keeps the public informed via official channels and hotline 18888.

This marks the fourth blackout in under six months, triggered by a failure at the Diezmero substation in Havana on Friday night, which resulted in a complete system outage. Cuba's energy crisis is exacerbated by outdated infrastructure and fuel shortages, leading to frequent power interruptions in recent months. This story is developing.
