U.S. Threatens Venezuela with Harsh Sanctions Over Deportee Rejections
Description not available

The Trump administration issued a stern warning on Tuesday, signaling potential new sanctions against Venezuela if Nicolás Maduro's regime refuses to accept the return of Venezuelan migrants deported from the United States. Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, emphasized that Venezuela is obligated to repatriate its citizens and that this obligation is not open to negotiation or any form of compensation.

In a post on X, Rubio cautioned that unless Maduro's government consistently and promptly accepts deportation flights, Washington will impose "severe and escalating" sanctions. This follows an announcement in February by former President Donald Trump that Venezuela had agreed to take back all undocumented Venezuelan migrants in the U.S., including members of the criminal gang "Tren de Aragua."

The agreement also required the Venezuelan government to provide transportation for their repatriation. However, it appears this provision has not been honored. On Sunday, the head of U.S. diplomacy revealed that, under the Alien Enemies Act, more than 250 individuals accused of being part of the Venezuelan-origin criminal group Tren de Aragua were sent to El Salvador. The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has offered to imprison the deported Venezuelans.
