Drug Crackdown Intensifies Across Cuba: Arrests and Seizures on the Rise

Friday, March 21, 2025 by Robert Castillo

Cuban authorities have ramped up their crackdown on drug trafficking across various provinces, leading to numerous arrests and seizures in Havana, Holguín, and other regions. Recently, multiple reports on social media have highlighted the capture of suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of illegal substances in different areas.

Arrests in Havana and Holguín

In one of the latest incidents, three individuals were detained in the Diez de Octubre municipality in Havana with approximately one kilogram of cocaine. Social media reports suggest the detainees were from Holguín and were traveling in a modern vehicle. Additionally, in Holguín's Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, police forces raided the home of Alexander Cobiella Milord, discovering marijuana seeds and other equipment allegedly used for cultivating and distributing drugs.

In Centro Habana, a similar operation led to the arrest of two individuals from Granma who were found with a significant haul of illegal substances. Witnesses reported that these individuals were moving between San José de las Lajas and the capital to engage in illicit activities.

Raids in Marianao, La Lisa, and Arroyo Naranjo

In neighborhoods such as El Palenque and El Chorro, located in the municipalities of La Lisa and Marianao, anti-drug operations resulted in the arrest of several suspects. Local residents noted a heavy police presence, with patrols extending across multiple streets. Authorities stated that these measures aim to "cleanse" communities affected by drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, in La Güinera, Arroyo Naranjo, police confiscated cash and illegal substances following a raid on homes suspected of being drug sale and consumption points.

Exemplary Trials and Stricter Penalties

The Cuban government has intensified its rhetoric against drug trafficking by implementing exemplary trials. Judicial authorities have warned that sentences can reach up to 30 years in prison, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty in aggravated cases. Official data indicates that over 92% of those accused of drug trafficking in the past year have received prison sentences, as the regime attempts to deter such crimes. Additionally, there has been an increase in the confiscation of properties from individuals allowing drug sales or consumption on their premises.

The New Anti-Drug Campaign in Havana

The Cuban regime has announced the Third Drug Prevention Exercise, taking place in Havana from March 17 to 22. As part of this strategy, the Ministry of the Interior has organized exemplary trials, community searches, and inspections at medication warehouses and road checkpoints, according to official information.

Furthermore, the government has promoted prevention activities in 57 educational centers, along with talks and meetings in neighborhoods affected by drug consumption and trafficking. Various state institutions, including the Ministries of Education and Public Health, the Prosecutor's Office, and the CDR, are involved in this operation.

However, this approach has faced criticism from some sectors, which view it as a belated response to a problem that has worsened over time. The proliferation of drugs in Cuba is attributed to multiple social and economic factors that have not been effectively addressed by the authorities.

Profiles linked to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) have shared images and videos of the operations on social media, aiming to reinforce the perception of a "zero-tolerance" policy against drug trafficking. Nevertheless, the increasing number of arrests and seizures suggests that the drug trafficking issue on the island continues to grow, driven by economic and social factors.
