Gente de Zona is charting a fresh course in their musical journey by embracing the reparto genre, which continues to gain traction both in Cuba and internationally. During a chat with Enrique Santos, the well-known Cuban duo revealed why they've decided to dive into this genre with their latest album, Reparto by Gente de Zona, at this point in their illustrious career.
"We are truly Cuban, and our international success doesn't mean we've stopped engaging with our music or the musical movements in our country," explained Alexander Delgado.
Addressing the criticism surrounding this genre, Randy Malcom remarked, "It's not the genre itself, but rather the artist who represents it. Reparto was often seen as marginal due to its lyrics, but there's been a shift towards cleaner content, which has broadened its appeal."
Alexander highlighted their aim to draw Gente de Zona's global audience to this new sound, fostering interest in reparto. However, he emphasized the need for the fall of Cuba's dictatorship to allow new generations of Cuban artists to think differently, free from envy and fear, and to collaborate rather than compete.
When asked by Enrique Santos who Gente de Zona considers to be the number one in reparto, Alexander humorously noted that such statements would dominate headlines. He stated, "I’m not the number one; I’m the one who has achieved the most results. For me, being number one means having discipline, focus, respecting other careers, supporting your family, and upholding your country's freedom. Those who claim to be number one will never truly be number one."
For this Cuban duo, what matters most is leaving a lasting impact on music. Success can be fleeting, and today's peak could be tomorrow's memory, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the music industry.
