In the early hours of Thursday, a group of six armed individuals broke into the municipal headquarters of Communal Services in Santiago de Cuba, making off with more than five million Cuban pesos (CUP). Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported the incident, which took place at Corona Street #806, between Santa Rita and San Carlos. The attackers reportedly assaulted and threatened five security guards, with one of the intruders brandishing a firearm.
Through his Facebook page, the journalist and activist shared statements from a nearby resident who said, "They severely beat the guards and threatened them with a gun." According to Mayeta, one guard, who was less injured, managed to alert the head of security, while the others suffered significant injuries.
The robbery has had a direct impact on the employees of the agency, as some have gathered in the surrounding areas demanding information about their salaries. They expressed frustration after a month of cleaning Santiago's streets, only to face uncertainty about their pay. "Mayeta, this is unacceptable. We came to collect our wages today, and now this situation arises. Who will compensate us after a month of sweeping?" a worker questioned while gathered with colleagues near the scene.
The police have cordoned off the area and are conducting investigations, searching for any traces left by the burglars, who apparently entered through the back of the building. As of now, neither the authorities nor the official media have released information about the event.
Earlier this week, on Monday, a state-owned truck was stolen in Havana. The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. and has raised concerns within the transportation sector and among state employees who fear repercussions due to the loss of state property. The stolen vehicle is a Kamaz truck, featuring a white cab with a purple stripe on top, blue bodywork, six rear wheels, foldable metal sides, and plates marked with the identifier IMAR on the front.
