Renowned Cuban musician Giraldo Piloto, celebrated for blending Cuban popular music with jazz, is reportedly planning to settle in the United States, according to sources close to the artist who spoke to CubaNet. Piloto, the director of the orchestra Klímax, joins a growing number of Cuban artists seeking better opportunities as Cuba grapples with a severe crisis.
The accomplished drummer, percussionist, and arranger has been posting videos and photos of his life in the U.S. on social media for several months. He currently resides there with his wife and young son. Just last week, he shared images with close friends, including comedians Omar Franco and Carlos Pillín, in Miami.
This week, Piloto posted a video clip from a past appearance on the Cuban TV show 23 y M, where he performed a song that reflects on everyday life titled "If Your Decision Is to Leave." Earlier this year, in January, host Alex Otaola disclosed that Piloto had chosen to remain in the U.S., similar to other artists such as Pachito Alonso and his sons, and comedian Luis Silva.
Born in 1962 in Havana, Giraldo Piloto is a prominent figure in the Cuban music scene. A graduate in percussion from the National School of Art, he was a founding member of the orchestra NG La Banda and has collaborated with internationally renowned artists, including Gonzalo Rubalcaba, who has been residing in the U.S. for several decades. With his band Klímax, Piloto has recorded seven albums.
Piloto is not the only Cuban musician to recently emigrate. In 2024, Lázaro Valdés, the former director of the famed orchestra Bamboleo, moved to Miami with his family, adding to the long list of artists who have left the island in recent years.
