Miami-Dade County authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the violent robbery involving well-known Cuban jeweler, York Valdés, who is popularly referred to as York the Jeweler on social media. The police have apprehended one of the alleged culprits linked to the assault that took place on March 13 at Valdés's residence.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Wilfredo Antuna, is facing several charges, including armed robbery and kidnapping. He was arrested on Thursday while wearing a white gold Cuban chain and a Gucci shirt, both stolen from Valdés during the attack. In a police lineup, Valdés was able to identify the suspect among eight individuals.
According to arrest documents reviewed by Local 10, one of the assailants reportedly said, "We know who you are, we know you are York the Jeweler," suggesting that the robbery may have been connected to his social media presence, where he has garnered over 120,000 followers.
The robbery occurred around midnight at the jeweler's home, located near SW 130th Avenue and 284th Street. Three armed and masked men broke into the home, subduing Valdés, his pregnant wife, and their daughter, forcing them into a room while they searched the house for cash, watches, and valuables. In addition to the jewelry, the thieves made off with designer handbags and a white Cadillac SUV, which remains missing.
Valdés recounted that he managed to escape and seek help during a moment of distraction among the criminals, potentially averting a kidnapping. "My greatest fear was for my family's safety," Valdés told local media following the ordeal.
Valdés, who owns York Jewelers with locations in Hialeah and southwest Miami-Dade, is a popular figure on TikTok, where he showcases luxurious jewelry and watches. The incident has prompted him to reconsider his level of personal exposure on social media. "This experience has made me rethink how much I share on social media," he admitted.
County Sheriff spokesperson Joseph Peguero urged the community to assist with the investigation. "We need residents to check their security cameras and report any suspicious activity," he stated. While one suspect is currently in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, police continue to search for the two other individuals involved in the robbery.
Authorities remind the public that anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Their cooperation could be vital in resolving a case that has shaken the Cuban community in Miami.
