A devastating crash involving a fleeing pickup truck left one person dead and at least four others hospitalized in northwest Miami.
Local authorities reported to CBS News that the incident took place on Saturday around 9:05 am at the intersection of Northwest 17th Avenue and 54th Street in Liberty City. This triggered an ongoing police operation aimed at finding the suspect.
Upon arrival, Miami's Fire and Rescue teams encountered a chaotic scene: an overturned vehicle, one person trapped inside, another ejected, and several individuals who were struck while waiting at a bus stop as the vehicle mounted the sidewalk.
Given the severity of the situation, rescuers categorized it as a "mass casualty incident" and deployed additional resources, including the Technical Rescue Team (TRT). This team stabilized the vehicle and used hydraulic tools to free a woman who was trapped inside, rushing her to the hospital.
In total, six individuals were affected by the crash. Five were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, with two in critical condition and another two ranging from serious to stable. Tragically, one of the victims succumbed to their injuries.
A sixth individual was assessed at the scene but declined transport to a medical facility.
The authorities are treating this case as a hit-and-run. Detectives are urging the community to help identify the white truck involved and its driver, who fled the scene.
The Miami Police Department is appealing to anyone who witnessed the accident or has details about the vehicle to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-8477.
