Cuban Woman Shares Her Experience Returning to the U.S.: "I Was Taken to the Immigration Room"

Monday, March 24, 2025 by Oscar Guevara

A Cuban woman residing in the United States took to social media to narrate her journey to Cuba and her subsequent return to U.S. soil. Despite the emotional rollercoaster and the looming uncertainty many exiled Cubans face regarding immigration, her trip proceeded without major setbacks. Identified as Diva Vargas, she shared a video on TikTok detailing her experience.

Before embarking on her journey to Cuba, Vargas made it a point to arrive early at the airport to sidestep the notorious long lines typical for such flights. During the check-in process, a staff member—though quite courteous—cautioned her about the potential risks of returning to the U.S. after a trip to the island.

“I felt afraid at that moment and explained that my mother was ill and alone in Cuba,” the young woman recounted, visibly moved. Despite her initial fear, she chose to proceed with the trip to see her ailing mother.

Upon her return to the United States, she encountered no significant issues, although immigration officials escorted her to the infamous "little room," a space reserved for additional questioning of certain travelers. “They took me to the famous room, and they were super nice,” she explained.

Vargas used her story as a platform to encourage others who might be apprehensive about traveling to Cuba amid evolving immigration policies. “Don't be afraid. If you have a defined legal status in this country and haven't had any issues, you can travel,” she advised.

The video, available on her TikTok account (@divavargas01), has sparked numerous reactions from Cubans abroad who face similar dilemmas.
