A teenage girl is in critical condition following a deliberate arson attack that took place Tuesday night at a home in southwest Miami-Dade. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO), an unidentified incendiary device was hurled into a residence on the 27000 block of 143rd Place in the county's southwest region.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response from authorities. A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, informed Telemundo 51 that the thrown object was likely a Molotov cocktail, intentionally aimed at the house while several children, including his nieces and nephew, were watching television.
The victim, a 16-year-old girl, sustained burns covering 80% of her body. She was sitting on a couch with two young cousins when the explosive device hit her. Initially, she was transported to Homestead Hospital by a relative; however, due to the severity of her injuries, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted her to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, known for its pediatric trauma care.
On Wednesday morning, the teenager underwent surgery. Her condition remains critical, though no further updates on her recovery have been provided. "They were listening to music and having fun when I heard an explosion. I ran out of my room to see my niece engulfed in flames," recounted an uncle to Univision.
The girl's screams alerted her relatives, who managed to drag her outside and douse her with water. Fortunately, the other children escaped unharmed. The family suspects someone close to them might be responsible for the attack. "I think he could have done it; I believe he was involved in this," the girl's uncle stated. "He definitely knows the family and has a history of violence," he emphasized.
The MDSO's Arson Investigation Unit has taken over the case, though no suspects or motives have been disclosed as of yet. Authorities are diligently gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. The violent nature of the incident, especially with children present, has raised concerns within the local community.
The victim's family has requested privacy as they await updates on her condition.
