Dayan Sotolongo, a young Cuban struggling with elephantiasis in both legs, has received an electric scooter due to the kindness of fellow Cubans living in Miami. Dayan shared the joyful news through a video, expressing his delight at being able to move around more easily.
The gift was coordinated by activist Osvany Sánchez, also known on social media as Pesca en Miami, with the support of influencer El Explotao and other individuals who contributed to ensure the scooter's delivery to Havana. "I know I can't help everyone, but I will always leave my blessings in every action I take with each person in need," Sánchez stated as he expressed his gratitude for the support received.
Dayan had publicly requested the scooter about a month ago. For years, he has faced significant challenges with walking, only managing to cover a block or two before becoming completely exhausted. Although Pesca initially mentioned the lack of an agency to transport the vehicle from the United States, he sought assistance from his followers, who quickly responded to the call.
"God bless you, my friend, such joy on his face," Sánchez commented emotionally on Facebook after seeing the video of Dayan trying out the scooter for the first time in his home.
A Long Journey of Struggle and Waiting
Dayan Sotolongo, 20, suffers from fourth-degree lymphedema in both legs, a severe condition he has been attempting to treat unsuccessfully in Cuba since childhood. In addition to his illness, he faces a complex bureaucratic process that has prevented him from accessing proper treatment. Despite a year of paperwork and online pleas for help, he remains unable to travel to Spain for surgery.
In February, Dayan disclosed that the government, specifically the Ministry of Public Health, had denied him the document stating that there is no cure for him in Cuba, a necessary step for obtaining a humanitarian visa. Through donations, he managed to gather the funds required for travel and admission to Spain, where a doctor had offered to treat him. Unfortunately, in a tragic family incident in December, the doctor lost her husband and son during the DANA storm in Valencia and is still undergoing therapy.
Dayan now awaits either the doctor's return or a new medical assignment for his surgery. "If God allows and if this government permits me to leave, because I need authorization first," he explained.
"I've been denied several times... Just like young Damir hasn't been granted his, possibly mine hasn't been given either," he emphasized.
Without the necessary support from the Cuban health system and with a social pension of just 1,500 Cuban pesos, Dayan survives thanks to the generosity of people who assist him with food and money. In the meantime, he continues to fight to leave the country and receive treatment to improve his quality of life.
The gift of the electric scooter, though a significant relief in his daily mobility, is merely one step in a journey filled with challenges and anticipation.
